According to Slash in his autobiography, producer Spencer Proffer suggested adding a dramatic breakdown before the ending. No one had any idea on what to do. As they listened again and again to the song in the control room, Axl started asking “Where do we go? Where do we go now? … where do we go?”. Spencer turned down the music, and said “Why don’t you just try singing that?” And thus the last part of the song was born.
